From a Commander Shepard that openly and eagerly employs lethal violence to the calculated genocide of entire species throughout the galaxy, Renegades are more than soldiers that don't play by the book, but evil. Their decisions have been immortalized by fans through online memes, showcasing the disparity between the two moral paths across the franchise. The Renegades are less morally ambiguous than embracers of full-on villainy. The revelation about players' morality choices is somewhat surprising given how hilariously over-the-top the Renegade decisions are across all four games. In a tweet, former BioWare cinematic designer John Ebenger revealed that approximately 92 percent of players preferred to play through the franchise's first three titles as Paragons rather than their more sinister counterparts.
However, it seems that a vast majority of players chose to take the high road. Related: EA & Bioware Appear to FINALLY Be Rebooting Anthem
In keeping with many of BioWare's previous role-playing video games, the fan-favorite Mass Effect franchise is built on player choices, often built around differing moral approaches to decisions throughout the narrative. In the original trilogy of the award-winning sci-fi action series, players have the option to choose between two different morality paths, with the more virtuous decisions labeling the player character as a "Paragon" while the more violent, morally ambiguous decisions label the player character as a "Renegade." Either path opens up additional dialogue options and changes how the protagonist is perceived by his peers as he continues further and further down either path. If there's ever a case within the video game medium that can support the argument that humans have an inherent moral streak, it's the fact that the vast majority of players chose to play Mass Effect trilogy to fight on the side of angels rather than embrace their inner demons.
